It looks like Canon is filing a patent to do some “good” in camera HDR in the near future and they have redone the way HDR is done in order to do this on-the-fly. Typically, High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is done by post-processing a few different exposures onto a single image. Canon is doing things differently and now, you’ll be able to take photos like this or this photo by a single click of the shutter.

Photography Bay has more details and the initial impression is that it will be pretty decent. Time will tell, but I really like the ability to tweak and customize. Having it done with a single click will take out the creative process and then it becomes a standard image like every other picture snapped.

According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, preliminary image capturing is performed using the image capturing unit, and the exposure time is assigned to each pixel based on the result of the preliminary image capturing. Image capturing can thus be performed with a wide dynamic range without a loss of highlight detail and a loss of shadow detail. – USPTO Appl.

While winter brings its own beauty, I often find myself uninspired to take out my camera when it gets cold outside. I was looking through a few of winter pictures that I’d taken last year and hope to get inspired to try out my 300S this winter. Here in Alberta we are currently sitting under 3 inches of snow and while it looks pretty, the lack of color leaves me a bit deflated.

That being said, I’m pretty happy with how this shot turned out last year. I believe I was using a D60 at the time. It worked out quite well and I really like the depth of field in this image.

If you want to take a look at a few other winter pictures and such, I’ve got a couple more worth looking at over in my “Ben Heide” flickr stream. I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments.

In about a month, I’ll be heading down to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV and will be taking along my camera of course and hope to get some nice night shows of the Las Vegas Strip. Time will tell how it all works out, but I’m hoping for some nice long exposure shots as well as a some HDR action.
